Don’t let inclement weather derail your fitness routine — take your workout indoors for year-round fitness and fun.
Instead of spending bad outdoor days in a slump on the couch, find indoor activities that can help you stay active.
Here’s a list of ideas to get you moving:
Join a gym.
There are many different types of gyms and workout facilities. Not all of them are full of elite, hard-core athletes. Find one that feels like a good fit, join, and make a point of going on a regular basis. It helps if you have a friend to meet there!
Take a class.
There are countless classes offered at gyms, dance studios, martial arts studios, and other places in the community. It doesn’t have to be a “fitness” class to get you moving. You might love step aerobics or you could opt for something off the beaten fitness path, such as ballroom dancing or hip hop. Look for a class that sounds fun and sign up. If the fun factor is high, you’ll be more likely to go.
Try a video.
If you can’t make it to the gym, there is a huge selection of quality fitness videos on the market. Most of them are safe, effective, and use equipment you are likely to have in your house. Consider pooling your resources with a group of friends and invest in a selection of videos that you can trade among the group. This will keep the boredom at bay.
Invest in home equipment.
If you can’t visit the gym, consider bringing the gym to you. Create a mini home gym, crank up the music, and get moving. Some people go big and invest in a large home fitness machine, but a few hand weights, balls, and bands offer plenty of fitness options.
Connect your bike to a trainer.
If you love cycling, consider investing in a trainer that allows you to place your bike in a stand that turns it into a stationary bike. While the snow flies outside, you can log hours on your bike in the comfort of your living room. You may even be able to catch up on your favorite TV show or movies.
Take up an indoor sport.
There are plenty of indoor sports that provide a fitness boost and social connection. Join a basketball league. Find a racquetball partner. Take up hockey. Join a volleyball team. Your commitment to your team will get you off your couch and into the arena where you’ll sweat, laugh, and play.
Dance.
Turn on the music and shake your booty. Nothing burns calories like some high energy dancing. It’s fun fitness—you’ll sweat and boost your mood at the same time/
