For men, testosterone is an important hormone. It helps regulate mood, sex drive, and muscle mass. Unfortunately, as men age their testosterone levels naturally decrease, leading to a condition known as “low-T” or hypogonadism. This can have serious implications on a man’s physical and mental health. Let’s take a look at the effects of low testosterone in men.
Reduced Libido
One of the most common symptoms of low-T is reduced libido (sex drive). A man’s sex drive is largely driven by his testosterone levels and so when they drop below normal, it can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and activity. This can lead to difficulty concentrating and sleeping. Men may also experience a decrease in self-confidence, which can further exacerbate the emotional issues associated with low-T.
Weight Gain
Low testosterone can also cause weight gain due to changes in metabolism and energy production. Men with low-T tend to have difficulty building muscle mass and may find that they are gaining weight more easily than before despite dieting and exercise. This too can compound the emotional issues and make them worse. This side effect alongside osteoporosis can be a recipe for disaster and injury as well.
Depression
Testosterone plays a role in regulating mood, so it’s no surprise that men with low-T often experience depression or anxiety as a result. Low testosterone can also lead to feelings of fatigue or lack of motivation which further contributes to feelings of depression. This becomes a vicious cycle of weight gain and reduced libido which can then cause worse depression. Some symptoms of depression include:
- Feeling hopeless
- Unmotivated
- Loss of joy in hobbies
- Fatigue or exhaustion
- Difficulty concentrating
- Suicidal ideation
- Difficulty sleeping
Erectile Dysfunction
Testosterone is responsible for stimulating certain areas of the brain which help produce erections during arousal or sexual activity. Therefore it stands to reason that men with low-T may experience erectile dysfunction as a result. Erectile dysfunction can cause further distress and embarrassment for sufferers. This can lead to problems with self-esteem or relationships with partners.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis occurs when bones become weak or brittle due to a lack of minerals such as calcium or phosphorus. This condition is more common in men who suffer from low testosterone because the hormone helps regulate bone density production within the body leading to stronger bones over time if left untreated for too long it could worsen into osteoporosis which could be dangerous for a man’s health over time.
Low testosterone can have serious consequences on a man’s physical and mental health if left untreated for too long. Men who suspect they may be suffering from hypogonadism should speak with their doctor about potential treatments like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which may help alleviate some symptoms associated with low-T such as depression, erectile dysfunction, weight gain, reduced libido, and even osteoporosis. If you think you might be experiencing any symptoms associated with hypogonadism then make sure you schedule an appointment with your doctor today!
